My name is Tress Miles and I am the
single mom to a 6 year old daughter that I adopted from
Guatemala when she was 2. I had some small concerns about her
behaviors but didn't have huge concerns until she went to
kindergarten. After about a month, I became convinced that
Lillie fit the description of a child with trauma history. I
read Beyond Consequences, Logic, and Control by Heather Forbes,
LCSW, and Dr. Bryan Post, LCSW and began to implement the
parenting paradigm described in the book. After 6 months in
public school, Lillie refused to go anymore. She was obviously
overwhelmed by school, so I began homeschooling her. I, too,
felt overwhelmed by having my daughter and her severe behaviors
at home with me 24/7. I had absolutely no support person or
support group whatsoever. I had taken Lillie to a child
psychologist in the area, but she was not trained in BCLC and
did not think I should be homeschooling Lillie. I felt as
though I was "twisting in the wind." So I contacted Rebecca
Thompson, M.S. to explore the possibility of phone coaching. We
began talking on the phone once a week in late February. I feel
that these phone calls have kept me sane during this time. It
is frustrating to know how you want to parent your child but can
find no professional help in your area. Phone coaching solves
that problem because you can live anywhere in the country and
have a parenting coach who lives anywhere in the country. It
amazes me that Lillie has made great strides since last February
and yet the therapist who is helping her has never met her!
