Conscious Birth
Plan for the most peaceful birth possible. If you know within yourself that you can have the baby naturally, chances are very high that you’ll be able to do just that. Having a birth team who you feel will support you in the birthing process has been shown to have much better outcomes (fewer interventions, lower c-section rates, etc).
Birth trauma is very real. Many feel that it doesn’t matter because baby can’t remember what happened anyway, but it does affect the baby on the level of the nervous system, and the trauma is stored in the cellular memory in the body. It deeply affects mothers, too, and depending upon what happened, mom may need additional support to work through the trauma. Birth trauma isn’t remembered in the traditional cognitive sense, but it will be remembered within the cells of the body. If interventions are necessary, spend lots of time with baby after birth, after you have worked through some of your own feelings about what happened. Talk to baby about how scary it was, and support baby through his feelings, allowing him to discharge the feelings in a supported way. Hold baby as much as possible skin to skin and be extra good to yourself as well. As you calm your own nervous system from an adverse birth experience, your baby will calm, too. You are inextricably linked together. Dads, support mom as much as possible during this time, keeping her stress levels very low.
