BCLC Level 1: Repairing Parent/Child Relationships: When There is Trauma, Adoption, and/or Severe Behaviors

This is a 5 week course based on Volume 1 of Beyond Consequences, Logic, and Control. Classes meet once a week for 90 minutes over a teleconference line. During the call, a live power point presentation will be shown, really bringing the 4 main principles of BCLC to life with pictures, illustrations, charts, and more!

Homework will be given after each class so that students can grasp a deeper understanding of the material covered. Because support is so important in parenting, each student will also have access to a private forum area for continued discussion throughout the week with fellow students and their Beyond Consequences Certified Instructor.

This class is a Level 1 class, designed to give parents the fundamental ideas behind why BCLC is so effective at reducing severe behaviors. It can be incredibly helpful to parents needing minor relationship repair, which is often the case in biological families. And it can be absolutely invaluable to those needing more major repair, such as in adoptive and foster families.

This level 1 class is a prerequisite for all other BCLC teleparenting classes offered by the Consciously Parenting Project.

Week 1: The Stress Model and How Memory is Stored After getting to know your fellow students through introductions, you will begin the journey of understanding what is truly at the root of your children's severe behaviors. What is trauma? How do stress and trauma influence all of our relationships? What role does memory play in our daily lives?

Week 2: Primary Emotions and Trauma and the Brain Our society places a great deal of emphasis on anger, often referring to it as a primary emotion. But this week's material will challenge that notion. We are going to take a look at the human brain and learn what is going on when children are lying, stealing, arguing, or shutting down emotionally. Are our children's severe behaviors really attempts to manipulate us? What does the latest neuroscience teach us about our children?

Week 3: Repetitious Conditioning and Blueprints This week you will use all of the information that you have gathered to begin changing the parent-child relationship. You will learn about negative repetitious conditioning and positive repetitious conditioning. What were your child's early life experiences and what "blueprint" did that give them for existing in relationship with you today?

Week 4: Neurophysiological Feedback Loops and Boundaries Vs. Consequences Neurophysiological feedback loops are often what keeps the parent/child relationship stuck. But what exactly is a feedback loop? How can you change negative loops into positive ones? You will be looking in-depth to see what feedback loops exist in your family and be given suggestions on how to make them different. Also, it is important to recognize that children thrive when loving boundaries are in place. What is the difference between boundaries and consequences?

Week 5: Angry and Hostile Parents and Unconditional Love When parenting a child with severe behaviors it is absolutely normal to become overwhelmed. This overwhelm often leads to resentment and anger towards your child. Sometimes it is really difficult to meet our children with love. But what is the difference between love and unconditional love? How can you begin to let go of your anger? Resources will be given to help families continue on their journey towards healing.
